 Last night (June 3) we celebrated the successes of our learners and tutors during 2018. Eighteen learners earned awards for more than 25-49 hours of instruction completed while an additional fourteen had 50+ hours.  Congratulations to our Adult Basic English Learner of the year Ruby Beckett! She is shown receiving her award from her tutor Susan Weir.  Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to our English for Speakers of Other Languages Tutor of the year, Karen Morris(Shown with Program Manager Raquel Strand) and our Basic English tutor of the year, John Campbell( not pictured), and to all our tutors who give so generously of their time to make sure every resident of the Shore can reach their full potential.  Our Business Supporter of the Year is PW Davis Disposal for their continuing support both financial and through volunteer hours. We thank our wonderful Professor, Kelly Gaskill, our Judge, Philip Wilson, all the sponsors, auction donors, teams, and attendees, the college and everyone who has helped us to continue to offer FREE English instruction to those who need it on the Shore. From the November 9 edition of the Eastern Shore Post: Literacy Council Appoints New Director Submitted Article Diane Gladstone, well known in educational circles on the Shore, has joined the Eastern Shore Literacy Council as executive director. Gladstone transitioned from her position as director of special populations for Accomack Public Schools Aug. 1 to join the council in its mission of offering opportunities to adults to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. Gladstone is a graduate of Parksley High School, Mary Washington College, and Old Dominion University.She has worked for 42 years in both the Northampton and Accomack county public school systems, serving as a teacher, school administrator, and central office administrator. In her last position, Gladstone worked with federal programs and grants, experiences that greatly enhance her ability to lead the council in finding the funds to be able to offer their services at no cost to the learners. Gladstone is an avid reader and loves to work in the garden. She and her husband, Ed, live at Silver Beach Gladstone in her retirement from full-time employment said, “The position as executive director came at the perfect time, allowing for part-time work while still connected to the field of education.” Gladstone is eager to support and promote the mission of the organization to empower adults in basic and digital literacy. She is looking to expand the educational and community partners that currently support the Eastern Shore Literacy Council and is actively seeking grants that will assist in support of the organization. This year we raised more than $6000 which will help us continue to teach and to support our tutors who, like you, give graciously of their time and effort to help those who are trying to improve their lives by learning to read and write. In its September, 2015 report “The Economic & Social Cost of Illiteracy,” the World Literacy Foundation states that illiteracy costs the American economy $362,490,000,000 ($362.49 billion) per year. Other studies provide similar results. Because of illiteracy, businesses, for example, must pay the cost of “fixing incorrect orders or processing refunds’” “customers lost due to poor communication,” “finding adequately skilled staff,” and “resolving internal problems and issues arising from miscommunication or misunderstandings.” There is also the price payed by those who are illiterate. Illiteracy locks them into a cycle of poverty that is costly to themselves, the economy, and society.
