February, May, and September: Tutoring Training
Volunteer tutors are always needed and welcome. We train tutors to teach basic reading and writing skills to adults or to teach English to non-English speaking adults (knowledge of Spanish or other languages is not required). A sixteen hour workshop starts you on this rewarding road. Training sessions are offered with several different schedules so that all interested volunteers can participate. Please contact the ESLC office for exact dates and registration information.
April: Spell Rite for Literacy
This is a "fun-raising" and "fund-raising event" for the Literacy Council. A Social Hour and Silent Auction precede the dinner which is held at a local restaurant. After dinner, teams of adult literacy supporters test their spelling skills until one team is left as the champion. To participate or attend, call ESLC for more details.
Feed-A-Mind is a week long event during which participating local restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds to the Literacy Council. The restaurants involved choose a particular day for lunch or dinner and serve a delicious meal which is usually entertaining due to the participation of local celebrity wait staff. Watch local papers for the Feed-A-Mind schedule or call the ESLC office.
October: Drive for Literacy Golf Tournament
Tee off for Literacy! The Annual "Drive for Literacy" Golf Tournament is held on the Friday before Columbus Day at the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club. If you would like to be a sponsor and/or have a great day playing golf, contact ESLC to sign-up.
