ProLiteracy's 2018-19 Annual Statistical Report is here! The report is a compilation of the data received from the Annual Member Survey that ProLiteracy Organizational Members are asked to complete. A few highlights and trends from this year’s report include: 55% of programs have student waiting lists—down 13 percentage points in 5 years The number of programs utilizing PAID instructors has increased by 4 percentage points since last year 36% of programs offer digital literacy—up 17 percentage points in only 8 years ProLiteracy uses this valuable data to advocate nationally on behalf of its member organizations. We also encourage members to use Statistical Report data to assist with their advocacy, awareness, and fundraising efforts locally. Proliteracy appreciates the time and effort our Organizational Members spend every year completing the surveys that make this report possible. Look for the next Annual Member Survey in early May.
The Literacy Council would like to thank AJ's on the Creek, the Blarney Stone Pub, DaVinci's Italian Kitchen, Don Valerio's Mexican Restaurant, the Island Creamery, the Island House, Mallards at the Wharf, the Marina Restaurant at Captain's Cove, Market Street Grill, Maurice, Ropewalk Chincoteague, Sting Ray's and Yuk Yuk and Joe's Restaurant and Bar for making or exceeding their pledged donation for Restaurant Week 2019. Thank you for supporting Literay on the Shore.
Wanda Caffrey, an owner of A and N Title and Settlement in Exmore is new to the board. Jackie Davis, former board member and educator, returns to the board as Treasurer after a year-long break. Their expertise in financial management and sound business practices will make our board even stronger. Thank you both for volunteering your time. The Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundation has awarded the Eastern Shore Literacy Council a grant in the amount of $15,000. The Eastern Shore Community Foundation awards grants to nonprofit groups on the Eastern Shore of Virginia with a focus on program areas that strengthen the community beyond the grant period. There is a time limit of five years between grant applications. The Eastern Shore Literacy Council’s grant request will upgrade the computer equipment in the office, as well as purchasing several laptops for use by tutors. The current equipment is over seven years old. This grant award dovetails nicely into the updates to current online resources as well as purchasing the equipment, so it can be installed when Eastern Shore Literacy Council makes a move into the new academic building of the Eastern Shore Community College. For additional information about the organization check out its website at www.esvcf.com and at https://www.facebook.com/esvcf.
If you are passionate about education and improving the quality of life on the Shore, and have a few hours each month for Board meetings and are willing to help with the major fundraisers, we have the perfect job for you! Contact any of of current board members, or the office for additional details. Board meetings are held the second Monday of each month.
